ECHOARY GUIDE · AI INTERACTIVE FICTION

AI interactive fiction where your choices become part of the story

Learn how AI interactive fiction combines authored story worlds, free-form player actions, character knowledge boundaries, and persistent consequences.

01

What is AI interactive fiction?

AI interactive fiction is a story experience in which the reader can influence what happens next through choices or free-form actions. In Echoary, each story begins with authored characters, conflicts, clues, and world boundaries. A player can select a suggested move or write what they want to say, investigate, or do. The runtime interprets that action, updates relevant relationships, evidence, risks, and memories, then continues the scene from the new state. Characters respond from information they have actually observed or received, so a private message does not automatically become public knowledge. This makes the experience different from simply asking a chatbot to continue a paragraph: the response belongs to a specific story world and must account for prior events. AI output can still vary, but the story is designed to preserve consequences instead of quietly resetting after every turn.

02

How does an Echoary story respond to a player?

Every accepted action moves through the same product loop. The model writes the scene, but structured story data controls what can change.

1. You act

Choose a prepared action or write your own dialogue, investigation, movement, or relationship response.

2. The world changes

The turn can update evidence, risk, relationships, available information, or a later scene.

3. Characters respond

Each character reacts from their own goals and knowledge instead of sharing one all-knowing perspective.

03

What happens after you make a choice?

  1. The action is interpreted as speech, movement, investigation, relationship behavior, waiting, or another supported intent.
  2. The current story pressure and character boundaries determine which consequences are valid.
  3. Structured effects are recorded before the next scene continues, so later turns can refer to what changed.
  4. The response creates evidence about the player's behavior without turning one decision into a permanent personality label.

04

How is it different from a linear story or general AI chat?

ExperienceHow you participateWhat carries forward
Linear fictionRead a fixed sequenceThe authored plot is unchanged by the reader
General AI chatSend conversational promptsContinuity depends on the chat context and product
EchoaryChoose or act in your own wordsStory facts, relationships, clues, risks, and character knowledge can persist

05

What should players expect?

Echoary is an evolving story application, not a promise of unlimited or perfectly predictable branches. Stories have authored boundaries, model responses can vary, and a meaningful action may change one part of the world rather than everything at once. The goal is visible continuity: choices should affect the scene, a relationship, available information, risk, or later conflict in a way the story can use again.
